(CNN) In an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer on Monday, Hillary Clinton claimed that in 2001 when she and Bill left the White House they were ‘not only dead broke but in debt’ noting that she can feel the pain of many Americans struggling to make ends meet.

Not according to The New York Times which reported in 2002 that Former President Bill Clinton received $9.2 Million in his first year out of office for delivering 59 speeches–in addition, Hillary Clinton earned $2.8 Million in 2001 as part of an $8 Million advance for her memoirs.
